Your water breaking is the classic indication of labor, probably because of its immediacy. Your “water breaking” is actually a rupture of the fluid filled sac surrounding the baby. Contractions should start soon after.

Contrary to popular belief, your water breaking is usually more of a steady trickle of fluid than a single large gush. It’s often difficult to tell whether it’s urine or amniotic fluid, but amniotic fluid is usually clear to pale straw colored, which is lighter than urine. Amniotic fluid smells like bleach, whereas urine smells like...well, urine.

If you think your water broke, remember the time and the color and appearance of the fluid, then call your healthcare provider right away.
